Rotor Sail installation and conversion of the Sea-Cargo ships “Trans Hav” and “Trans Sol”

Sea-Cargo’s Sto-Ro vessels Trans Hav and Trans Sol have undergone an extensive conversion, marking a major step toward a more energy efficient and sustainable vessels. The upgrades position the vessels among the most environmentally advanced of their kind, integrating cutting-edge sustainability solutions and modern technological enhancements.

The vessels have been refitted with three rotor sails each, along with a new deck cover/garage structure added above the existing ro-ro weather deck. The new top deck is equipped with solar panels to support additional clean energy generation.
The rotor sails are installed on newly designed, hull‑integrated foundation structures at the ship sides.

Further upgrades include a new ESS battery system, dedicated deck house, scrubber, and SCR exhaust cleaning units, as well as main engine improvements, new propeller blades, and enhancements to ventilation, fire detection and extinguishing systems, automation, and power and energy management systems.

MDC delivered the full conversion study along with all engineering design documentation, drawings, structural analyses, and stability calculations.

Scope of Work and Key Upgrades:

  • Enclosed upper ro-ro deck with ventilation, fire-fighting systems, lighting, and related installations.
  • Three Norsepower rotor sails (24 × 4 m) mounted on new hull-integrated foundations.
  • ESS battery plant with associated ESS deck house.
  • Solar panels installed on the new top deck.
  • Energy Management System (EMS) installed; Power Management System (PMS) and Integrated Automation System (IAS) upgraded.
  • Scrubber installed and prepared for closed-loop upgrade.
  • Two SCR units installed.
